In two hours at Moss Landing I managed to fill my flash cards without moving more than a hundred feet. I’m always amazed by the concentration of life and energy at the slough. Hundreds of shorebirds and marine mammals inhabit just the small marina and vicinity.

The fast flow of water through culverts under the bridge on Jetty Road makes a prime spot for big juicy shellfish, and the otters are well aware. The otters at Moss Landing are very tolerant of people, and this one continued feeding within four or five feet from shore.

As the tides fell, the large shorebird flocks began flying around, finding freshly exposed mudflats.

As I left I swear the sea otter was taunting me to jump in the water and box.
