Today started out plainly enough, the boat departed at 7:30 into thick fog. It looked like it might let up, but never did. Birds were tougher to come by, but we still managed a fine day, all the jaegers, a skua, three shearwaters, and over a hundred Ashy Storm-petrels. We had an incredible humpback whale directly behind the boat surface twice and go for a deep dive! The day had been quite good, despite the weather, and we started heading back.

What I didn’t know, was that Captain Tinker had talked with some of the Monterey whale watching boats and they had found a group of Orcas at a kill! When we could see the other boats on the horizon, Debi got on the PA and gave everyone the scoop. Soon enough we saw as many as six orcas. After presumably finishing their kill, they split into a few groups and watched them splash around and zoom around just below the surface! It was the sort of occasion that kept us out an extra hour, and we all felt very privileged and thankful to witness it.

I was specifically asked to put up “not just the good pictures” so here are all of them.
