It was a sunny day out on Monterey Bay with Shearwater Journeys today. But, there was an orange glow that rivaled the morning sun to give this trip a great start! PUFFIN! The bird gave us three wonderful laps of the boat, nearly crossing over the stern! Then it landed and when we approached, it took some level of curiosity in the boat, or so it appeared. Even after bothered by gulls and dolphins, we left it sitting on the water, feeling treated to such a great look at a stunning bird.

The rest of the day was highlighted by BIG flocks of Storm-petrels, mostly the endangered Ashy Storm-petrels. In the fluttering crowd, at least one Wilson’s Storm-petrel tried to fit in. We saw a good diversity and enjoyed many looks at Jaegers of all sorts and sizes.

Two great new birds today! It’s impossible to convey the brightness and saturation of the Puffin with the camera. These alcids are tough, see how a bird hides on the open ocean?
